After the completion of hair transplantation, the patient is recommended to remain lying down(face upwards)for one to two days to prevent bruising or swelling of the face. On the day after the procedure, we perform the first hair wash and check-up and describe to the patient how the hair should be washed throughout the next two weeks. The patient is also informed about antibiotics, painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs, which will be used for one week.
As of the third day,the patient begins to wash his/her own hair,as previously instructed. The scabs on the scalp are removed completely within this washing phase of 10 to 15 days.
As the follicles have not yet grown veins at this stage, the transplanted hairs begin to fall out after two to three weeks. Within one to two months 70-80% of the transplanted hairs will have fallen out.New hairs will start to grow within two to three months, and the patient will gradually attain his/her desired appearance within six to eight months.
The complete re-growth of the implanted hairs can take up to a year.
In the event the thinning area is large and there are insufficient follicles on the nape of the neck for transplantation, the thinning may not be covered in a single session. In order for a second session to be performed, the patient will have to wait six to eight months.
Where and under what circumstances is hair transplantation made?
As a surgical procedure, hair transplantation should be carried out by a plastic surgery team inside an operating theatre in a hospital or at a surgical clinic.
Anaesthetic type
Hair transplantation is usually made under local anaesthetic so that the patient feels more comfortable. Once the skin becomes numb, the patient feels no pain, but may feel sensations of pulling or pressure on the head during the course of the procedure.
General anaesthetic is used in cases of tissue enlargement and flaps. In this type of anaesthetic the patient remains unconscious throughout the procedure and feels nothing.
